Alpha Dragon's Nanny: A Dragon Shifter Romance (Billionaire Shifters' Nanny Mates) Page 12

“Why do you think you’re going to die?”

“Because I am human, and I know about you guys. That means I die. I read it.”

“That was a long time ago.”

“So, are you saying that they don’t kill humans off for knowing now?”

She liked that possibility, he could see it clearly in her expression, but that wasn’t to be.

  “No, they still do that.”

Her face fell, as well as her shoulders, like gravity was suddenly kicking in hard core.

“Well, then, nothing has changed, and you should just let me go. I think that this would be quicker, though pulling me back was kind of cruel. Now I have to go through it again. Not cool.”

He shook her with a firm grip on her shoulders.

“Josselin, get it together. You’re not going off the edge again and no one is going to kill you.”

“But I’m human and I know.”

“Many shifters have humans in their lives that know about them.”

“So, do we just not tell anyone? How can we do that, if I have to go see the seer?”

  “Heard that did you?”

  Josselin agreed.

“And that’s why you took off?”

“Well, yeah. I thought that I wanted to leave, but then I couldn’t, so ending it swiftly and with little pain, seemed like a better option than what you guys would come up with. I didn’t want to go through it, and I didn’t want you to have to go through it, either.”

Antonio sighed loudly and shook his head. “Poor, Josselin. Always looking out for everyone else, but not herself. What would that have left you?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know. Dead, I guess. It was my own fault. I knew the rules and I shouldn’t have broken them. I shouldn’t have read your journal. I see whose fault it is. I don’t see it as much of a surprise.”

He just shook his head, asking out loud what he was supposed to do with her.

Antonio pulled her into his arms and kissed her hard. He couldn’t even explain how he’d felt when she’d gone over the edge. His heart had dropped in his chest and he was still waiting for it to go back where it was supposed to be.

Deciding that he was done with them being out there where she could do something stupid again, he lifted her up into his arms and carried her to bed. She had her arms wrapped around his neck and they both ignored the few people scuttling around, getting stuff done. Antonio was still shaking from it all, but he felt better with her in his arms. Everything was starting to look better, and he was able to calm down.

When he got to his room, he set her in the bed and then went to lock the door. Antonio wanted to touch her and taste her. He wasn’t worried about all of the conversations that had to happen in the next few hours. That could wait. It was important, but it wasn’t near as important as the rest of it was. Not only did he need to assure himself that she was still his, but that she was okay as well. That was harder to do.

Kissing her and listening to her whimpers, made him realize that he was never going to be able to live without her. He certainly didn’t want to and the very idea that he’d almost had to, wasn’t lost on him.

He stripped her and Josselin fell into his arms immediately. She opened her legs to let him in and they both made sighing sounds when he drove forward and settled inside of her.

“I swear, Josselin, if you ever do something like that again, I will lock you up in the highest tower and never let you go.”

She giggled for a second, until he drove further in and the gasp was all that was left. Antonio wasn’t sure what he was doing, but he wanted to claim her, make her see that it was all over. She wasn’t going anywhere. Josselin was all his and once he made her apologize for jumping off the roof, he started to feel a bit better. At least she knew that she was being ridiculous.

They made love for an hour, every time he was close, he would slow down. Antonio wanted to make it last, and he was also putting off the talks that he didn’t want to have.

It couldn’t go on forever, though. Antonio knew that he had to have the conversation, the one that he dreaded. He told himself that it could be a good thing, but he wasn’t sure if that was possible. He knew what came next and was actually looking forward to some of it, some of it he was not.

“So, let’s talk about all of this.”

Josselin sighed. She was sleepy and her voice was far away.

“What do we have to talk about?”

“We need to talk about the fact of what is going on. You know, the reason you were ready to jump off the roof.”

Josselin turned away, her face getting red. Antonio moved her to look at him.

“It doesn’t have to be that way.”

Josselin sighed. “How can it be any other way? I’m human. You’re a freaking dragon and I know. We have to go see those council people and that seer is going to know that I know what you all are. Then, I’m going to be killed. That’s how it went with the ones you wrote about, plural.”

He grimaced. She had read a lot, and though he did feel strange that she had delved into his mind in a way, he was actually glad for it. It meant that he didn’t have to explain everything, some of it would have been impossible.

“Yes, but there are ways to bring the human into the community. You didn’t read that part, huh?”

Josselin shook her head and she looked like there was a bit of hope in her heart. He wanted that to continue, so he told her what he had known the whole time.

“We just have to get married, Josselin. It’s going to be perfect. My daughter loves you, I love you. When you’re my mate, they won’t be able to touch you. That’s how it works. You will be safe and mine.”

Josselin paused and pressed her lips together, avoiding his eyes.

“Really? You mean that we could get married and they would leave me alone?”

“Well, almost like that. There will be a few little hang-ups that will have to be taken care of, but nothing big. We’re probably already there.”

He smiled at her and she frowned. “What are you talking about?”

His hand went to her stomach and then he kissed the same flesh. “You have to put some skin in the game, Josselin. You have to have one of us, so that you won’t want to tell the world about us. If you did, it would hurt your own child.”

Josselin was alarmed and sat up. She wanted to know what he meant about how they might already be there.

“Well, Josselin, I don’t have to tell you how babies work. We’ve been doing a whole lot of practicing lately. It won’t be long, if not already. Soon, you’ll have my baby and you’ll be my mate.”

She just stared at him. “Say something.”

  Chapter 21

Josselin didn’t know what to say. She was shaking inside, knowing that what he said was real, but still not really able to believe any of it. She couldn’t imagine that it would be that simple. She didn’t even worry about the decision to marry Antonio. She would in a heartbeat. Antonio was the very sort of man that she was looking for and he made her feel like everything was going to be okay. She loved Ophelia and knew that they could have a good life together. What more was there to think about?

  “Okay.”

He growled at her and pulled her underneath him for another round of kissing. Josselin was melting underneath him and she couldn’t think of a better answer than that one. It was all a shock to her, but it sounded like the best way out. She would have married him without finding out any of it. The fact that he was a dragon was still something to get used to. Josselin didn’t know much, but she knew that she wanted him.

She fell into his arms and they spent the rest of their time before their meeting with the council wrapped in each other’s arms.

The next morning, Josselin was told that everything was going to be okay, but she didn’t feel like it. She was going to have some kind of shifter in her head and she didn’t know if she liked the idea of it. Some of the memories in there were horrible and no one else needed to ever see them.r />
Josselin knew that she didn’t have a choice, though. It was just how it was all going to work. She was going to have to give in to the moment and to the rules of another species. What the end of the day or week for that matter would bring, she had no clue at all. All she knew for certain was this was supposed to happen. It was scary, but real.

Josselin wanted a new and better life and everything worth anything, needed to be worked for.

  ***

  One Month Later…

Josselin was putting her dress on when Ophelia walked in. She smiled up at Josselin. “You look really pretty.”

Josselin smiled and lifted her up so that she was on the edge of the vanity where Josselin was getting ready. The little girl had the same dress on as she did, since she’d loved it so much and Josselin couldn’t have been happier with how it all worked out. The little girl looked happy to be there and so was Josselin. It was all just what she needed to happen.

The meeting had been nerve-wracking but hadn’t been near as bad as Josselin thought it would be. The seer was short with her at first, but she quickly changed her tune, and Josselin imagined that she’d seen so much.

After that, the meeting hadn’t been long at all. She was approved to become a knowing human and they were able to set a wedding date.

The date had arrived and after Josselin fixed Ophelia’s hair, the little girl scampered off and she was left alone to stare at her reflection in the mirror. Josselin wanted to believe that it was all going to work out, but she was worried. Her nerves were high, and the people just kept streaming in, the helicopter non-stop.

There was a knock on the door and Josselin thought that it was Ophelia coming back.

“You don’t have to knock, sweetie. Just come on in.”

Josselin went to get Ophelia but found Antonio at the door. He made a comment about her beauty and then took her hand, pulling her out toward the helipad.

“You know, it’s bad luck to see me in the dress before the wedding.”

“We’re getting mated, not married, and I’m not human.”

Josselin agreed and then asked where he was taking her.

“You’ll see. I think I finally found a way to make you even happier here.”

Josselin agreed that it would be hard to do. “I don’t know, Antonio. It’s pretty perfect here. It would be hard to top.”

“I didn’t do it, Josselin. I mean, I agreed to it, but that was something that the seer wanted done.”

  “The seer?”

Antonio stopped her near the opening to the atrium. “Yes, the seer. You made one hell of an impression on her, and she said that if anybody deserved grass, it’s you.”

Josselin looked at him strangely and then gasped. The room was full of grass that had been planted, as well as all the way out, to walk in more. The grass went on for a while, wildflowers intermingled. She was amazed at it all.

“What is this? Is this like the fog, a mirage?”

“No, it’s real. There is a forcefield that will kick you back if you go too far, to keep it safe, but there is a meadow out there for you, Josselin.”

Josselin was crying and running back into his arms. It was perfect, all of it was. Josselin had to stop and pinch herself discreetly, sure that it was all a dream.

She knew that it wasn’t, though. Josselin could have never come up with it all, not in a million years. This was all new to her and she was still grappling with her new reality.

She held him tight, until finally letting go. Antonio asked her if she was ready and for a moment, Josselin had no idea what he was talking about. When she asked about it, he finally grinned.

“Are you ready for the rest of your life?”

Josselin agreed that she was. She was ready to start and before they went to the main hall where the ceremony was, she wanted to tell him something.

“Our family has started, Antonio. I just thought you should know.”

He picked her up and spun her around before she smacked his hands and told him to release her.

  “Everyone is watching Antonio, stop.”

He laughed. “Let them watch, Josselin. I am the happiest man alive. I couldn’t care less who knows it.”

  Prologue

Frank was beside himself. He’d been out all night, searching the outback for his beloved wife. She would never be gone from her daughter, not if she didn’t have a choice. The man was forlorn, and he looked to his baby daughter, knowing that she would be remiss if she didn’t get her mother back. He would be lost without Elizabeth. He wouldn’t be able to go on with her. Not with a baby girl in tow.

His father’s second came in, Jeffrey, his mentor and the man that had raised him while his father was off at one war or another. The life of a shifter Alpha was a busy one, especially when everyone was trying to always take what belonged to the Cavalier Clan. Jack didn’t have a choice, but to defend his land with everything that he could.

Now though, Frank was starting to think that none of it was a coincidence. The look on Jeffrey’s face told him that he was right. There wasn’t going to be a happy ending out of all of it. It wasn’t going to be good at all. It was all a mess.

“Tell me Jeffrey, what news do you have for me, that would have you looking so stricken?”

The older man was the same and even though he was trying his best to pull his face up, it seemed impossible, because he didn’t do a very good job of it.

“We found Marlon Ways. We thought that she had been taken, because of the state of the room, but it doesn’t appear to be what really happened Frank.”

He knew that he wasn’t going to like what was about to be told to him, so he wanted it quick, ripped off like a bandage. Then he would be able to deal with whatever it was. First though, he had to know what he was going to have to get over. Was Elizabeth dead?

Frank held himself rigid, waiting for the words that were going to devastate him. He was sure of it.

“Out with-it Jeffrey. You’re making this worse than it has to be.”

“Sorry Frank. I don’t know how to say this, so I am going to come out and say it. We don’t think that she was taken at all.”

“Well, if she wasn’t taken Jeffrey, where the hell is she? I mean, she’s gone, yeah? She left her daughter.”

“Right, I know all of that Frank, but the proof is pointing to her just leaving. She took some things with her, clothes, a few pairs of shoes, a purse, some money.”

He was just describing the fact that she had some things with her, but since Annalise could get upset stomach on occasion, she would bring extra clothes. She could have taken some cash out to have on hand, that wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. The only thing that didn’t make sense was the fact that Anna was there. He was convinced that she wouldn’t have left her daughter if she didn’t have to. Frank was so sure of that, so when Jeffrey told him what he thought was going on, Frank didn’t believe it. He couldn’t.

“We think that she ran off Sir.”

“Don’t call me Sir Jeffrey. Tell me what is going on? Why would you think that?”

He looked down, his hat in his hands, spinning around the rim like he had all of the cares of the world on his shoulders. Frank wanted to know more, knew that there was more, or he wouldn’t look the way he did. He wasn’t going to get it easy. Apparently, he was instead going to have to coax it out of the man.

“We know that she is with Marlon Ways.”

Frank sat up, ready to leave and get his wife back. The mother of his children would not be in the hands of his family’s enemies. The Ways Clan had
been a thorn in their side since as long as Frank could remember. They hated his father Jack and the more he got to know why there was animosity, he understood it. Frank stayed away from them, trying to stay out of conflict, but that hadn’t worked as of late. Lately, he noticed that the leader, Marlon, was sniffing around his wife. He was convinced that he needed her and had even tried to get her to leave with him.

Frank had found out about it, challenged the Alpha, but he knew that there was nothing that could be done. Marlon wouldn’t accept it, even though to not do so would bring shame on his clan. He didn’t seem to worry about what others thought of his pack. He shouldn’t either, as it was one of the biggest in the area. He didn’t have to care about appearances.

He was worried about appearances though, even if he couldn’t control his reaction in the telling of it all. Jeffrey would never say anything to anyone. He would take the information to the grave, but that didn’t mean that Frank couldn’t feel the embarrassment that his wife had left him for his enemy. That was what was being implied. He didn’t need Jeffrey to say it out right, he could read between the lines.

“Are you sure that it is of her own volition?”

Jeffrey sadly said yes, his head so low that his grayed-blonde hair was casting shadows around his eyes.

  “Thank you for telling me.”

Frank wanted to think it all through. He had a daughter sleeping a few feet away and he couldn’t help but wonder what it would mean for Annalise. What kind of mother would do such a thing, leaving her child in the world without her? How could she do this to me, he wondered to himself. It was hard to think of the words as true, but he didn’t need proof. There had been a distance between them the last six months, that had only seemed to get worse. Frank had hoped that their daughter would set things right, but maybe he had hoped for something that wasn’t going to happen.
